Publisher Electronic Arts has announced that it is considering renaming its yearly football games going forward. The news comes after FIFA 22 manged a “record-breaking” launch, already pulling in 9.1 million players.
7.6 million Ultimate Team squads have been created and 460 million matches played since FIFA 22 was released earlier this month, the publisher noting that plenty more is to come over the course of the current season.
“We’re here to create the best experiences for football fans everywhere. To do that, we start by listening to our players,” EA Sports Group GM Cam Weber said.
“We hear consistently that what matters most is growing the global community, creating innovative football experiences across new platforms, a commitment to every level of the sport including grassroots, and accelerating the elevation of the women’s game. As a result, we have a clear vision for the future of football.”
Weber goes on to point out how authenticity is core to the FIFA experience, which is why the publisher has focused its efforts on building relationships with “over 300 individual licensed partners that give us access to 17,000+ athletes across 700+ teams, in 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues around the world.”
The publisher didn’t share the reason behind potentially renaming its football games going forward, but clarified that the process involves “reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world.” Could it be about to walk away from FIFA?
FIFA 22 is out now on PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia.
