Battlefield 2042’s specialists weren’t everyone’s cup of tea and often figure among the major reasons why fans of the series didn’t stick with its latest entry. But as developer Dice works to address the feedback it received since launch, players hoping the characters would end up removed and replaced with traditional classes, rather than reworked, may not get what they’re asking for.
After delaying the release of Season 1, developer Dice is currently also working on updates to Battlefield 2042’s existing content alongside patches that deliver fixes. Specialists are confirmed to receive changes, but not much was shared on the matter until earlier this month.
Responding to a fan of Twitter asking if the removal of specialists counts among the changes currently being worked on, Game Designer Frederik Drabert said that they “will not be removed but reworked,” as spotted by Battlefield Bulletin.
In a later tweet he also noted that “almost everyone” at the studio is working on “many different areas” of Battlefield 2042, with “a lot of improvements” being on the way.
The complete removal of Battlefield 2042’s specialists was always unlikely, given how they’re a core part of the game and its approach to monetization, but even a rework could get them closer to the traditional classes that quite a few players desperately want back.
Dice has yet to provide a broader roadmap for its latest first-person shooter but update 4.0 is slated to go live next week, introducing over 400 fixes, including updated traits for specialists Paik and Rao.
