For those not in the know, Starpoint Gemini Warlords is an upcoming sequel to the 2014 sci-fi space simulator that's currently running through Steam's 'Early Access' initiative. Its predecessor is being offered for free in celebration of this new version hitting 300,000 unit sales.

This newer version owes a lot to its predecessor, too. Despite now being free, Starpoint Gemini 2 followed a similar Early Access route before its official launch in 2014. 4X strategy elements were so sought after, the team began work on the sequel to fix what fans wanted most.

So if you're looking for those 4X strategy elements, you're likely better off picking up Warlords. If you're looking for a gateway into the Starpoint Gemini franchise, free access to the title that birthed the current isn't a bad deal at all.
