MetaArcade is making a pretty unique proposition. They’re bringing back a 70s-era RPG called Tunnels & Trolls, adapting its rules to a digital format, and launching a self-publishing platform for individuals use those rules to create their own works of interactive fiction. They recently announced a major visual addition to their platform in the form of art from Discworld artist Josh Kirby.
In the wake of the success of Dungeons & Dragons, many similar RPGs popped up in response. One of those titles was Tunnels & Trolls, which traded in D&D’s complicated combat rules for a more simplified battle format with more focus on narrative and role-playing. The defining characteristic of this game ended up being its wide line of solo adventures.

Some of those solo adventures will be coming to MetaArcade’s new platform, along with art from the original books by Josh Kirby. The company partnered with the late artist’s estate to bring the work to these digital updates. Folks making their own adventures under the self-publishing platform will also be able to make use of the art.
The first preview of these digital renditions will take place at GenCon, which runs August 4-7. It’s certainly a unique idea, and I definitely don’t mind seeing the return of some classic fantasy artwork. (Thanks to PCGamesN for the report.)
