Oh, No Man’s Sky. Thanks to a vague but grandiose marketing campaign and the rampant plague of gamers without reasonable limits on their expectations, the beautiful, expansive crafting and survival game is being looked upon as a darn near religious experience. Leaked copies of the game are getting out, spoilers are everywhere, and the universe is in abject chaos.
There’s reason to believe that some of the higher profile eBay auctions, which have included final bids in the thousands, are fake, but with gameplay video and impressions proliferating the internet, it’s safe to say at least a few of those copies are legit. Spoiler-filled video spread like wildfire over the weekend, and that has made Hello Games’ Sean Murray pretty sad.
We’ve spent years filling No Man’s Sky with surprises. You've spent years waiting. Please don't spoil it for yourself :(

Check out our list of upcoming PC games, and speculate endlessly about whether No Man’s Sky will be one of the year’s best! (Or just wait another week and play it for yourself.)
With gameplay out there, many fans are slowly starting to realize that this video game is, in fact, just a video game, and not a way to recapture the lost innocence of youth, or whatever magical experience they were hoping for. That’s not to say No Man’s Sky won’t be great–heck, I haven’t played it yet–by the hype has gotten off the rails in a way I haven’t seen in a long time.
Early players have reported reaching the end goal of the galaxy’s center in a dozen hours, but I’m not going to dig too much more deeply for spoilers than that. If you want to see the leaks for yourself–or if you enjoy the schadenfreude of watching people with impossible expectations learn about a video game–check out the No Man’s Sky subreddit. If you just want to play the gosh-darned video game for yourself, it will be out August 9 on PS4 and August 12 on PC.
