Speaking at EGX last week, Valve’s Chet Faliszek was pretty upfront about the issue of VR headsets such as Valve’s own upcoming HTC Vive causing motion sickness - if that happens, it’s the developer’s fault.
”The idea that VR must get you sick is bull**,” he said,” not mincing his words. ”We have people come in who don’t want to do demos. In a party of ten people there will be someone who says, ‘I’m gonna be sick, I’m gonna be sick, I can’t do this.’
With the Vive, the Oculus and various other virtual reality headsets on the way, the issue of potential motion sickness has been something that audiences are understandably concerned about. Valve has been pretty adamant that the Vive solves this issue, so anything that happens is down to poor decisions on behalf of the developer.
”As consumers and people in the community, hold developers to it,” he urged. ”They shouldn’t be making you sick. It’s no longer the hardware’s fault any more. It’s the developers making choices that are making you sick. Tell them that you don’t want that.”
The hopefully vomit-free HTC Vive is expected to release in full early next year.
