The Kickstarter campaign for Seven Dragon Saga, a new fantasy RPG based on a new pen and paper RPG designed by former SSI figures Keith Brors and David Shelley, has been cancelled.
Despite the setback, developer TSI isn’t giving up quite yet. In a recent blog post, they admit they may have made a few mistakes with their crowd-funding campaign, which reached only $106,000 from a $450,000 goal.
“We knew there would be a lot of you that remembered the classics or would appreciate our efforts to build a fresh RPG,” writes TSI, “but we underestimated how much new content we’d need to show in the middle of the campaign to engage people that were less familiar with the older games.”
A major issue was that RPG fans unfamiliar with Brors and Shelley’s work on the Gold Box range of AD&D games back in the 90s didn’t have any proof of concept for what the team was hoping to create.
“We’d thought we could talk about core mechanics when it is clear that you want to actually see those mechanics in action. We need to show off more than we had ready right now. There came a point where it became more tell than show.”
Still, the team is looking for other ways to bring their idea to life. Kickstarter hasn’t seen the last of them, apparently.
“We’ll be coming back as soon as humanly possible,” TSI promises, “with a better, more refined Kickstarter, and some code you’ll actually be able to play, along with killer videos and artwork.”
