NorbSoftDev’s Scourge of War: Waterloo is out now, giving history and strategy buffs an opportunity to experience the final battles of the Napoleonic Wars from the perspectives of the French, British and Prussian forces.

The game contains 20 historical scenarios, 3 multiplayer scenarios, as well as the potential for user-created sandbox scenarios and a full sandbox campaign.

At its core, Scourge of War: Waterloo is a real-time strategy game in which you have to master the disciplined military tactics of the period in order to send old Bonaparte packing. A couple of things set it apart from similar games, however; firstly, there’s a focus on historical accuracy, with unit names, weapons and formations all based on historical examples. Secondly, the game simulates the complex chain of command that made large-scale battles like Waterloo possible.

“Players are not by definition placed on top of this chain (though it is possible),” the team explains, “but are often placed somewhere in between. Meaning that during the battle, they get orders from above, interpret them and form a strategy with them, then, they will send out their couriers to deliver their own orders to the units directly under their control.”

Scourge of War: Waterloo also utilises 2D sprites drawn on 3D terrain, meaning that the game can pack in thousands of troops, artillery and cavalry on the screen without requiring a God-tier PC. There’s also weather effects, an improved interface, and a number of other features that you can rad about on the game’s product page – the game’s only available through publisher Matrix Games’ online store.
