Warhammer 40,000: Regicide, the 40k universe’s unique take on chess, is coming to Steam Early Access ”in the coming weeks”, developer Hammerfall Publishing has announced.
We don’t have an exact date just yet. Pre-orders for the game, which spices up its turn-based strategy with various special unit abilities and a host of gory death animations, have been open for around two months.
Regicide mode will match players against Hammerfall’s impressively named Codex Artificial Intelligence Engine, while you’ll also be able to head online to battle against players across the world. There’s also a Classic mode, which judging from the website description seems to drop the unit abilities and psychic powers in favour of pure chess gameplay.
The game hasn’t yet been added to the Steam store, so it’s not exactly clear what content will be available in the initial Early Access version. We do know that the playable races are your classic Space Marines and Orks, and that the game contains ”hundreds of dynamic kill and death animations between detailed characters”. In the grim darkness of the far future there are only gory death animations.
For more info, and a bunch of pre-order options, check out the game’s website. When Regicide launches on Steam it will be priced at $14.99.
