Publisher Bethesda has released a trio of videos for The Evil Within that take a look at the game’s development process.
Hosted by Adam Sessler, the videos also include discussion with producer Masato Kimura and creator Shinji Mikami, who explain their design philosophy, inspirations and approach to creating true survival horror gameplay.
Well worth a watch. The top video is kind of an introduction, so you can skip to the bottom two for the really interesting stuff. It’s clear that Mikami’s not just recycling old survival horror concepts, but trying to put a new spin on how players approach familiar problems in The Evil Within. Hence the more erratic, unpredictable enemies and the lack of available ammo - it’s more important than ever to pay attention to your environment and utilise traps and stealth to avoid an unpleasant death.
There’s also some musing on exactly what ingredients make for the best ”fear soup”, which leads to an extended and increasingly confusing beverage metaphor. Like I said, worth a watch.
The Evil Within isn’t far off now. The game’s due out on PC and consoles this October 14.
