The first prototype for a Steam Machine outside of Valve has been unveiled by iBuyPower. It’s a white box with the Steam logo stamped on the top, and it’s got a glowing ‘trench’ running all around.
The prototypes are operating an early build of SteamOS, and iBuyPower has two models designed codenamed Gordon and Freeman. No tech specifics but 1080p and 60 fps are assured.
The other model is black apparently. iBuyPower say these are being prepared for the 2014 launch of the Steam Machines. SteamOS is to be released for free by Valve eventually.
You don’t have to bother with a Steam Machine or SteamOS if you already have some worthwhile devices in the home as Steam is soon to enter beta for its In-Home Streaming feature which lets a powerful PC do all the work and stream the game through a network to a paired device.
