Last December, developer GameForge announced that their hardcore MMO Aion would be going free-to-play. The company has now announced that the MMO will be transitioning to the FTP model on the 28th February in Europe.
Players with existing time left on their accounts after the 27th February will have their remaining days converted to Aion coins at the rate of 5 per day. In other words, if a player’s subscription runs through to the 3rd March, those 5 days will result in 30 Aion coins, which can be spent in the premium store.
According to GameForge, ”If you took out an Aion subscription before the changeover (regardless of whether it is still active or has already expired), we will reward you for your loyalty and award you “Veteran” status. With this, all game options are open to you free of charge and you also receive special bonuses. For new players (Starters), who start playing after the changeover of Aion, there will be a few minor restrictions in an effort to protect the game against bots and gold sellers. You can remove these restrictions by buying a Gold package.”
The developer also announced that a major 3.0 update will be arriving this Spring, which will add a new housing system and mounts, among other things.
