Saints Row has captured its own corner of the sandbox as an all-out, unabashed prankster with a love of toilet bowl humour. That’s the way it’s staying promises Volition.
It can be said that Volition’s Saints Row has filled a void left behind by Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto after it went all mature on us with GTA IV. Sure the GTA soap opera keeps the dark humour but it’s lost the silly.
”I think with The Third we’ve definitely defined the sort of game we want to make,” Phillips said. ”This is the open world we want – we want our players having fun when playing our games, and we want that to be our focus as a studio and as the Saints Row team,” said Scott Phillips, design director at Volition Inc.
Does this mean the studio needs to crank up the crazy with Saints Row 4? ”I think it does. I mean, I think you always have to take the next game to the next level, you want to maintain the feeling of the previous game but expand it in new directions. And I’m sure we’ll come up with ideas that will push that boundary.”
Saints Row: The Third releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC November 15th in the US, 18th in Europe. It seems Volition is more than happy to indirectly confirm Saints Row 4 is in the works, which was pretty much a dead cert anyway. Do you enjoy the outlandish debauchery of the Third Street Saints, or is Grand Theft Auto’s direction more your thing?
